Although decoupage is a centuries old art, this new offshoot of incorporating painting and decoupage into an art form has been developed by the incredible decoupage artist Nerida Singleton of Australia.

Terra Bella Finishes Products Needed:
Decoupage
Gel Medium
Old World Peasant Paint
Varnish

Instructions for application are as follows:

Begin by printing or copying your favorie photo with a Laser printer.  Make sure you are using a Laser Jet color copy print as Ink Jet copies of prints tend to run.

With a brush apply a layer of Decoupage over the top of the print.  Let dry.  We suggest applying another coat of Decoupage for a thicker layer. Tear paper around edge of print, pulling the edge of paper toward you.  This allows the paper to be very thin at the edge, making the paper adhesion to the canvas less obvious when glued down.

Brush Decoupage across canvas about 2 inches in depth at a time.  Press print over wet area and after pressing and smoothing this area continue applying Decoupage down the canvas in 2 inch increments, smoothing and pressing the print as you go.  You may have to apply a coat of Decoupage to the top of the print as it makes it easier to manipulate the print if it is wet.  Working slowly this way should eliminate any wrinkles or bubbles.  Let dry.  You may also use a brayer or roller to press the paper down.

With the Gel Medium brush around edges building up and try to get a level look.  The purpose is to disguise the print and try to get it to look as if it were a part of the canvas.  Let dry and reapply gel medium, if necessary.  At this time you may also take the Gel Medium and apply it on the canvas and photo as if you were painting with a brush.  This leaves marks that look like heavy brush strokes.

With Old World Peasant Paint paint out as much of the canvas and background as you want.  Let dry. With the many colors of Old World Peasant Paint paint in the background, extending the background of the print to the canvas. On a pallet you can mix these colors and make any colors desired. Or just paint a background of your choosing.  The use of Old World Peasant Paint makes the Extension look like an oil painting.
